The Double Irish Chain is complete. I might add borders if it becomes a back. This is a partial shot of the top. The top is square - 13 blocks.

So, what's next? I pulled two projects from hibernation to marry as front/back. The Old Maid's Ramble has a lot of dark blue fabrics which are hard to discern in the photo. The blocks finish at 17", so I only need 25. This will be the front. The shirting top is an antique quilt Bonnie Hunter posted on her blog years ago; she graciously gave me permission to recreate the quilt. I'm targeting early September to get these to the quilter.
The quilt bug found me in April. Unfortunately, I only had scrap strips at hand. I decided to make four patch blocks and worry about design when I was reunited with my stash. The project became a Double Irish Chain. I threw 340 four patch blocks in a large bag and left selection to chance (for the most part :). The blocks went together quickly - each block constructed from four 'four patch' blocks, five constant patches and four selected patches. The top is over halfway constructed!

Amelia was an accomplished quiltmaker with possible assistance from household slaves. At least four of her quilts have survived (three of which are inscribed as gifts to her children), two in the Colonial Williamsburg collection and two owned by the DAR (one of the DAR quilts could have been made by Amelia's daughter-in-law). All four quilts are currently on display - two in the Williamsburg's exhibit 'A Rich and Varied Culture, The Textiles of the Early South' and two in the DAR exhibit, 'Eye on Elegance'. The quilts from this post are from the Williamsburg exhibit where photos were allowed.
This exhibit has made its way thru multiple locations, so you've probably seen these quilts on other blogs. They are worth another look. This Oak Leaf quilt (ca. 1860) was made by Sarah Ann (Elliott) Dunn from Elliottstown, IL. Sarah's husband, Andrew, enlisted in the IL U.S. Infantry at age 49. Her son, Thomas, served his country at the age of 18.
I've been absent from the blog for the summer. I had a couple of deadlines that monopolized my free time. The first project was a knitted shawl for my niece's Paris honeymoon. Knitting is a great travel project and I got alot accomplished on my work commute. She returned home last Sunday - can't wait to catch up with her.

Second project - in mid May my number came up on the AQSG Civil War Quilt Study waiting list. The deadline for quilt delivery was Sept. 11, 9:00 AM. It literally took every minute - I am now re-acquainted with hand quilting. The label was sewed on the night before the 5:30 AM road trip to Milwaukee. Unfortunately, I had no picture taking opportunity in daylight hours prior to handing over custody. The lighting in the exhibit area was a tad dark. The quilt measures 42.5" square. The inspiration quilt is from The Quilt Index #09.0207. Now we're all caught up!

She is quite a good, little artist (9yo), and chose fabrics for a nap quilt herself. She approved a simple design -
Not wanting the remnants, I pieced the back, and kind of like it. But I'm yearning to work with repros again soon. First I have to work on my daughter's modern quilt of aqua and grey.

If you remember my find in Iowa a few months ago, it finally has fulfilled it's purpose.

The inside of the box was quite rough. Varnishing still left it that way, even after three coats, so I decided to line the box. While looking for the right fabric, I came across some scraps of low- loft poly batting. I have no recollection of why it was there, but there was just enough to do the job.

Looks more like a dolly coffin, doesn't it? The batting stuck to the rough wood, so I didn't bother with another liner. Easy, peasy!

The Copp Quilt from Stonington, Connecticut (pg 23 if you're following along) was one of the first three quilts collected by the museum in the late 19th century. This is a framed center quilt with cut out corners. From The Smithsonian Treasury American Quilts, 'Two dresses in the Copp family collection are made of fabrics that appear in the quilt. One dress dates from about 1800, and the other from about 1815, the time when the quilt was probably made.'
Day 4 started with a trip to the National Museum of Women in the Arts to visit the 'Workt by Hand: Hidden Labor and Historical Quilts'. They had a 'no photo' policy and the exhibit book was out of stock; but according to this 'A Quilter by Night' blog post, The Brooklyn Museum exhibit must have had a more lenient photo policy - be sure to click on 'Part 2' at the bottom of the post. I have one thing to share - not the eagle above - that was Day 5, but I'll get there. I studied my 'favorite' quilt from the exhibit for quite awhile. Jan discovered that Mary Koval has reproduced the quilt, Lydia, and the free pattern pdf is available here.
Update - thanks to Sandy's comment on the previous post. The Workt by Hand exhibit is at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA thru Sept 1, 2014 - link.
In the afternoon, we visited the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. We saw some amazing things - the top hat President Lincoln was wearing when he was assassinated, the Star Spangled Banner flag that inspired our national anthem, Dorothy's ruby slippers, the First Ladies' Gowns, and the original Kermit the Frog. Here are a few of the items on display that resonated with me -
Day 5 was the best day ever. It personally ranks just under momentous family events (weddings and births). In the morning we were on the Smithsonian 'Behind the Scenes' quilt tour - AMAZING. If you're planning a trip to DC, you have to plan around this - the second Tuesday of the month excluding January and February (I think - check to be sure). Space is limited, so sign-up early. We saw many of the quilts from the book The Smithsonian Treasury American Quilts by Doris M Bowman. If you have this book (and you should - used copies on Amazon for $0.56!), dig it out to refer to to get the overall view of the quilts I'll post pics of. Remember to bring your copy of the book - I wish I had mine with me to get Ms. Bowman's signature. This event ran long and we just made it to our afternoon appointment - Textile Tuesday at the DAR. BEST DAY EVER!!!
I'm sharing a couple photos from the Smithsonian but will post more later (maybe tonight). The beautiful Indiana sunshine is tugging at me! These photos have been shared on other blogs, so this might be a repeat, but they're all worth a second look!
The eagle from the beginning of the post is a close-up from the Maryland Album Quilt on pg 53 of the book. Book excerpt: 'This album quilt was probably made about 1860, perhaps for a member of the Wilmer family of Kent County, Maryland. Much of its elaborate applique was made three-dimensional by gathering folded strips of fabric and stitching them down in various shapes, while some of the motifs are padded with cotton fibers under the applique. Twelve of the twenty-five blocks have embroidered, inked, or stamped signatures or initials.'

Also appropriate to the Memorial Holiday is the Stars and Stripes Quilt from pg 57. Book excerpt: 'Mary Rockhold-Teter of Noblesville, Indiana, made this quilt during the Civil War, when patriotic symbols were much on the minds of Americans. The design, adapted from the American flag and named Stars and Stripes, appeared in the July 1861 issue of Peterson's Magazine, a women's periodical published in Philadelphia.... Mary made the quilt for her son, George, a Union soldier. In the quilting she included his name, the names of Generals Scott and Taylor under whom he served, "Genral Lyon," the president of the United Sates as "Abe" and "Ab Lyncoln," the word "Cat," and the year, 1861. Written in ink on the lining is "George Teter."'
Day One: After converging from various points the night before, our trip began with a two hour drive in the rain to visit the beautiful Hagerstown, MD Washington County Museum of Fine Arts quilt exhibit, 'Beauty in a Time of Scarcity: 19th Century Quilts from the Collection of Lewis Allen and Katherine Haag. Unfortunately, pictures weren't allowed - this was one of the highlights of the trip. The quilt exhibit included some choice pieces. We finished the day with power fabric shopping at Zook's in PA Amish Country - we arrived 45 minutes before closing. We lucked into a 30% off sale - Woo Hoo! This was our only night at a B&B - Kimmell House in Ephrata, PA, a 1795 Colonial Shaker stone farmhouse - delightful!

Day Two: Morning fabric/antique shopping (fabric at Sauder's and antiques in Adamstown) before an adventurous drive to the NJ quilt exhibit celebrating the 300th anniversary of Hunterdon County, 'Common Threads: Quilting Traditions in Hunterdon County, NJ'. Info on the exhibit can be found here - http://www.hunterdon300th.org/events/QuiltDisplay-CommonThreads.html. Update: You can receive the exhibit catalog by contacting Judy Grow (judy.grow@comcast.net). The cost is $13.50 which includes shipping. Make checks out to 'Hunterdon Tricentennial'.
The quilt was begun in 1851 in Lewisberry, PA by Margaret Potts and was completed in 1858, the year of her marriage to David Reeser Miller. In 1886 she gifted the quilt to her son for Christmas. He noted the names and relationship to Margaret of each block contributor. Margaret made 13 of the 85 blocks - one in memory of her sister. Margaret's two twin brothers Andrew and William each stitched a block for the quilt at the age of twelve.

This has always been a favorite block, so I thought I would make a sample 9" - too small. I wanted to see the fabrics more, with a larger scale block, so I sewed a 12" sample. You can see where this is going...

Yes, indeed, there was no stopping. This is still just blocks, and I'm considering a border. As I was sewing, I thought that this should look like an upscale farm quilt, which makes me lean toward no border. It will be 72" square as is.

My weekly commute includes two legs - I travel thru Charlotte to catch a prop plane to a small airport in eastern North Carolina. I knew I wouldn't make it from the small airport to Charlotte, so I rented a car and drove five hours to increase my chances of getting home for the weekend. My Indiana winter driving skills got me there safely. I waited in line for two hours to get booked on a flight the next morning. Unfortunately, there were no hotel rooms available - my only option was to spend the night at the airport. Amazingly, I had a quilt packed in my luggage! I finished hand stitching the binding earlier in the week and the quilt was packed to bring home.
These tinman blocks were pieced in the '90's, and were intended as part of a two-sided quilt with a friend from Oklahoma. That project never came to fruition.

A couple of months ago, I was thinking about UFOs, and put these up on the design wall. My granddaughter loved them, and since her favorite color is red, I chose to border in reds.

The top is 60" square, and will make a nice napping size quilt for her.

This crib quilt top is for my grandson, due February 6th. I had another one in the works, but nursery colors were changed to Seahawks' navy and lime green, along with alligator print sheets. My daughter and son-in-law are in Alaska, so I didn't know about the switch until last week! I quickly chose an online free pattern. Not exciting, but it will look nice in the nursery.
I'm wrapping up 2013 with a finished doll quilt top. Last Saturday I picked up Crib Quilts and Other Small Wonders by Thos. K. Woodard and Blanche Greenstein at the library (I have this book at home, but not in my current location) with no intention of starting anything new. That evening the hubster had 'control of the controller' - we have very different TV viewing interests. So, what to do? Start cutting from the meager strips I have with me for a doll quilt that caught my eye earlier in the day! The stars were invisible when I was piecing (had to squint real hard), but they stand out in this photo. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough of a light fabric that I could use as a constant.
The Variable Star inspirational quilt is on pg 26. It was made in the second quarter of the 19th century. The dimensions are given as 41" x 38", but this must be a misprint. The quilt is 13 x 9 blocks (a difference of 4). That would make the block size under 1" which would make for very different dimensions. My block units are 1" making the pieced area 13" x 9".
I did a little staging on a doll bed I picked up earlier in the year. The mattress is a cocktail table book and the bedshirt is an orphaned lace doily picked up at flea markets/yard sales. Don't you hate to see those bins of handwork jumbled together with a $1 tag? The quilt top will be too small for this bed, but it looks great by the Christmas tree.

The other day I was watching an episode of Sew Many Quilts, and I remember thinking, as I have before, that the safety glove they wear seemed kinda silly. It looks so cumbersome, and awkward. Monday afternoon, I had been cutting long strips for a baby quilt backing - no problem. When I cut the first of the short strips at the top of the photo, I cut into the side of my fingertip. There was't any blood visible on the blade so it didn't seem too bad. Then I ran my finger under the faucet - ouch - to see the damage. It really isn't awful, but the side of my fingertip, and fingernail, were sliced off. My first, and hopefully last, rotary cutting incident in 25 years of quilting! At the off-hours clinic, I did learn that a cut like this heals from the outside in, and should be kept moist, and covered until completely healed. Also, that running the cut under tap water for 15-20 minutes is as good as irrigating with saline, OR mix some wound disinfectant into a glass of water, and soak for the same amount of time. I really hope none of you need this information, though!

When I got back home, I checked to see if I could still cut with a giant forefinger, and it was no problem. Get back on that horse! But, maybe, that safety glove isn't such a bad idea now.

The International Quilt Festival in Houston always includes a few antique quilts from the Festival Quilt Collection - this year I found three.
There's always a quilt at the top of the escalator on the second floor. This year it was an applique quilt on a sweet printed background. You can get 'up close and personal' with this quilt.
The second quilt is the backdrop for countless photo ops. There's a large banner above the quilt identifying the quilt event and year for documentation that you attended the show (a fun idea and you get your picture taken with a gorgeous antique quilt!). Here's this year's souvenir (sorry, thought I had cropped off the banner, but you get the idea) -
The third (alas, the last) quilt is a collaboration of two generations of quiltmakers. The top was pieced circa 1885 - 1895 (artist unknown). Tiny triangles were used to depict the texture of the pineapple fruit. Vicki Mangum dyed contemporary cheddar fabric to match the fabric from the original top. Two small borders of cheddar and muslin were added in 2003 and the quilt was machine-quilted by Kathy Colvin.
I have a wonderful local library. It never disappoints, but the modern structure can't compete with the North Adams Public Library in MA. The mansion was the home of Sanford and Eliza Blackinton from 1869 thru 1896. In 1897 the mansion was purchased by the city for the public library and opened the following year.
Just up the road I ran into another sweet library - the Gilbert Hart Library in Wallingford, Vermont. The library was given to the Town of Wallingford on July 25, 1894 by Gilbert Hart. It is built in the Neo-Classical style. The foundation and lower walls are rock-faced blue marble and the upper walls are terra-cotta buff brick.
